In our last blog, we talked about a few things that you should do to prepare your lawn mower for the spring and summer. Although there are several steps to tuning up your lawn mower, sharpening the blade is one of the most important. When your blade is sharp enough, it will make your job easier and your lawn healthier. Before we get into how to sharpen your blade, you should know that you have the option to take your lawn mower to your local hardware store to be sharpened by a professional. The following is a guide from our Grand Junction lawn care professionals for sharpening your lawn mower’s blade:
- Step 1 – Remove your mower’s spark plug – This is ALWAYS your first step when you are working with a lawn mower, so don’t forget.
- Step 2 – Remove your mower’s blade – To prevent the blade from moving while you are working, place a piece of wood in between your mower’s deck and the blade itself. Now, grab a wrench and start removing the blade. Keep in mind that even if your blade is dull, it is still sharp enough to do some damage, so be careful when handling it.
- Step 3 – Clean your blade – Rust and grass clippings can start accumulating on your blade over time, and now is the perfect time to ensure that your blade is clean and ready to go for the warm season ahead. Carefully wipe your blade off with a clean washcloth.
We have just a couple more steps for you to help you to sharpen your blade like a professional. Stay tuned for our next blog to learn more.
