In our latest blog, our lawn care experts in Vail, CO went over a few tips for ridding your lawn of weeds. Unfortunately, your lawn is just one of the places where you will have to battle those pesky weeds. The other big source of weeds will be your garden. The following is our list of secret tips from our professionals for keeping those weeds out of your garden:
- Prepare your soil – It’s no secret that tilling your garden is one of the very best ways to ensure that those weeds stay out of it, but the real secret is tilling twice. Weed seeds can lie in wait deep within the soil, waiting to germinate. The first round of tilling brings the weeds to the surface so they can germinate and start sprouting. A couple weeks after your first round of tilling, till again to remove the young weeds from your garden.
- If you have a large-scale weed problem – Who wants to spend all of their time picking weeds one by one? There’s a better way! Before you plant anything else in your garden, use the heat to rid the soil of weeds. Wet your soil and then grab a clear plastic sheet to secure over the weeds. Let it sit for a few weeks in the heat and then your weeds should easily come out of the soil.
- Don’t forget to mulch – Mulching is one of the most effective ways to prevent weeds from invading your garden because it prevents the seeds from getting enough light to germinate. If any weeds do end up struggling through the mulch, they will generally be weak and easy to remove.
