Weed Control for Your Colorado Lawn
A lawn full of weeds generally signals several underlying problems. Most weed problems are related to the topsoil’s health and condition, and the vitality of the turfgrass growing there.
Soil Problems Usually Fall Into Several Categories:
- Lack of soil nutrients
- Soil compaction
- Thick thatch layer
- Inadequate water, or too much moisture
- Too much shade for the turfgrass to develop
Controlling Colorado Lawn Weeds
Lawns extremely infested with weeds need something more than just weed control.
Improving the soil should be at the top of the list. This means regular fertilization, regular aeration, adding top-dressing occasionally and over seeding your lawn at the appropriate time. Follow these guidelines and in a short period of time your topsoil will be one of the best topsoil’s in the neighborhood. And when you have great topsoil, you’re going to have a great lawn!
Types of Weed Controls
There are 2 basic types of weed controls: pre-emergent and post-emergent.
Pre-emergent Weed Controls
Pre-emergent weed controls prevent many grassy type weeds from taking root in your lawn. This is a time sensitive application and must be in place in the early spring. Once applied, an invisible protective layer stops weed-seeds from taking hold. This will prevent crabgrass and other grassy weeds from rooting.
Pre-emergent Weed Controls for Bedded Areas
Rock, bark, and bedded areas can be kept free of weeds with our weed control program. Start in the early spring with a pre-emergent that can help to keep weeds down and receive up to four follow-up applications throughout the season.
Post-emergent Weed Controls
Post-emergent weed controls takes care of weeds after they have sprouted. Dandelions are a good example of a weed controlled by post-emergent controls. Unless weeds are extensive, we normally spot treat for these types of weeds.
If lawn weeds are extensive, it may be best to wait until early fall when new grass seed can be applied. Killing off all the weeds in mid summer could leave some large holes in the yard.
Hard to Control Colorado Weeds at no Extra Charge
Some weeds are difficult to control. When on our fertilization weed control program we will treat these difficult weeds without any additional charges.
Colorado Lawn Aeration
Most people are not aware of the benefits of aeration, yet it is one of the most important treatments for a healthy lawn. Aeration helps reduce compaction and keeps your soil in the best shape possible.
Even with the best care available, lawns can thin out and lose color due to excessive thatch buildup, hard or compacted soils, or periods of high temperature, high humidity, or drought. Aerifying and overseeding is recognized by turf experts such as golf course superintendents as the best treatment to control thatch, reduce compaction, fill-in bare spots and revitalize growth.
A New Type of Lawn Aeration
We have a “Liquid” Solution for your compaction and alkalinity issues.
For years, golf course, sport fields, and lawn care professionals have understood the benefits of aerating turf grass. Now there is a product that works better than aerating machines and can be applied as a simple liquid spray application. Our product is an environmentally-friendly liquid polymer with a strong negative charge that forces itself down into your soil, expanding and uncoiling, aerating your lawn and removing sodium from the soil. Because of its positive charge(and clay’s negative charge) sodium can contribute greatly to soil compaction and can also prevent your grass from using the nutrients in the soil.
This process provides for total coverage of the whole lawn, it leaves no mess, and lasts for months.
Benefits of Liquid Aeration
- Makes a lawn greener – Removes sodium from soil so that your fertilizer and other nutrients in the soil work better
- Makes better use of water – Save time and money by getting the most out of your watering. Lets water penetrate the soil more easily and reduces standing water and runoff.
- Reduces compaction – Aerates and loosens the soil so that your grass’ roots can grow deeper and stronger.
- Makes your lawn look better even during drought conditions – a lawn that received an application in the spring will hold up better in drought conditions, due to increased use of water and a deeper, healthier root system.
Lawn aeration is a great way to keep your lawn happy, and improve the soil it grows in. For thin lawns or problem lawns, it is a good idea to over-seed the lawn after aerating.
Newly aerated lawns provide an almost ideal environment for growing new grass seed. This will help fill in those bare or thin spots, giving you a thicker, healthier turfgrass that will crowd out weeds and help prevent new weeds from developing.
Aeration Services for a Healthier Colorado Lawn
While aeration is beneficial for many lawns, it isn’t appropriate for every situation. Here are some guides to determine if your lawn needs this service:
- When the soil is compacted
- When the thatch layer is more than 1″ thick
- If you’re going to over seed your lawn. Aeration exposes soil and provides better seed-to-soil contact needed for good seed establishment.
If you think your lawn may not be ideal, it may be because the soil is compacted or has excess thatch buildup. Give us a call and we can give you a free estimate on aerating your lawn that will improve those troubling conditions.

Grub Control
A white grub infestation is caused when various types of adult beetles, including Japanese beetles, lay eggs in your lawn. These eggs hatch as larva and burrow into the soil to feed on grass roots, causing the grass to brown and die. As grubs continue to grow and feed, the damaged areas become larger. Once grubs change into beetles they may even begin to feed on ornamental plants. If the infestation is severe, white grubs can kill large areas of your yard.
MTM’s grub treatment is preemptive and is applied during the early stages of the larvae growth to prevent an infestation. Since grubs live in the soil, the materials must also be watered into the lawn to be effective.
Grubs are controlled most effectively when a lawn is treated from mid-summer to early fall. This is when they have recently hatched and are feeding closer to the surface. Your MTM specialist will determine the best time to treat your specific lawn.
Adult beetles often return to the same area year after year to mate and lay eggs. For this reason, you will probably need an annual preemptive control program to help eliminate grubs and prevent further damage to your lawn.
