Colorado Weed Controls for Your Lawn
A lawn full of weeds generally signals several underlying problems. Most weed problems are related to the topsoil’s health and condition, and the vitality of the turfgrass growing there.
Soil problems usually fall into several categories:
- Lack of soil nutrients
- Soil compaction
- Thick thatch layer
- Inadequate water, or too much moisture
- Too much shade for the turfgrass to develop
Controlling Lawn Weeds
Colorado grass extremely infested with weeds will need something more than just weed control.
Improving the soil of your Colorado grass should be at the top of the list. This means regular fertilization, regular aeration, adding top-dressing occasionally and over seeding your lawn at the appropriate time. Follow these guidelines and in a short period of time your topsoil will be one of the best topsoil’s in the neighborhood. And when you have great topsoil, you’re going to have a great lawn!
Types of Controls for Colorado Weeds
There are 2 Basic Types of Weed Controls: Pre-emergent and Post-emergent.
Pre-emergent Weed Controls
Pre-emergent weed controls prevent many grassy type weeds from taking root in your lawn. This is a time sensitive application and must be in place in the early spring. Once applied, an invisible protective layer stops weed-seeds from taking hold. This will prevent crabgrass and other grassy weeds from rooting.
Pre-emergent Weed Controls for Bedded Areas
Rock, bark, and bedded areas can be kept free of weeds with our weed control program. Start in the early spring with a pre-emergent that can help to keep weeds down and receive up to four follow-up applications throughout the season.
Post-emergent Weed Controls
Post-emergent weed controls takes care of weeds after they have sprouted. Dandelions are a good example of a weed controlled by post-emergent methods. Unless weeds are extensive, we normally spot treat for these types of weeds.
If lawn weeds are extensive, it may be best to wait until early fall when new grass seed can be applied. Killing off all of the weeds in mid-summer could leave some large holes in the yard.
Hard to Control Colorado Weeds at no Extra Charge
Some weeds are difficult to control. When on our fertilization weed control program we will treat these difficult weeds without any additional charges.
Colorado Trees and Shrubs Care

- Minor tree trimming to clear walkways and parking areas.
Insect & Disease Control
- Dormant oil spray (Late Spring – Early Summer) Aphid & Mite (throughout the season) IPS Beetle (consisting of 3 sprays per year), Ash Bore, Locust Bore (Early Summer)
Deep Root Feeding
- Balanced Root Feeding scheduled in the spring and fall helps to improve and protect your landscape investment. The proper nutrition helps prevent many types of stress that weakens plants.
Thistle Control
Canada thistle (Cirsium arvense) is a non-native deep-rooted perennial that spreads by seeds and aggressive, creeping, horizontal roots (rhizomes). Canada thistle can grow 2 to 4 feet in height. The leaves are oblong, spiny, bright green in color, and are only slightly hairy on the undersurface. Flowers occur in small clusters that form on the ends of branches. They are about 1 cm in diameter, tubular shaped, and vary from white to purple in color with a strong vanilla scent (female flowers).
Canada thistle emerges from its root system from late April through May. It begins to flower in late spring to early summer with increase in day length. Canada thistle only produces about 1,000 to 1,500 seeds per plant. Typically, it reproduces through a creeping root system, and can quickly form dense stands. Every piece of root, from 1/2 to 1 inch in length, is capable of forming new plants. The key to controlling Canada thistle is to eliminate seed production and also to reduce the plant’s nutrient reserves in its root system through persistent, long-term management.
The key to effective control of thistle is combining control methods. These weeds need to be continually stressed, forcing it to exhaust root nutrient stores and eventually die. Of all control methods, prevention is most important.
